There’s not much of a view from the top; the hike is all about the journey through the Pemi Wilderness. This hike is 17.6 miles, but has very little elevation gain. It’s a long day, but it a rewarding one, and if we can get an early enough start, we may even see some moose along the way. If the Mountain Gods are with us, we tack on Mount Jackson after Pierce at the end. We start about 4:00 in the morning and finish around 8 or 9:00 at night and when the day is done we will have hiked about 22 miles, 26 if the group collectively decides to go over to jackson at the end. What we do on this hike, is offer a bucket-list type hike to those who have not hiked that much before, lack confidence in their hiking ability, or who are regular hikers but want to join a fun group for some good times in the mountains. You must be in reasonably good physical condition. No, it doesn’t mean you have hiked 20 miles before, nobody would expect that, but it means that you are not winded from walking around the block and are keen to do what you need to prepare yourself physically to do this hike. You don’t have to be ready to hike 20 miles tomorrow; we have time to get in shape. You must have basic hiking equipment including, sturdy shoes, a day pack, and suitable rainwear. You will need microspikes for our first hike and hiking poles are highly recommended. You must participate in three training hikes that we will do as a group in preparation of the traverse. The training hikes will focus on different skills and will be three weekend day hikes spaced apart to give plenty of recovery time before the next one. The training hikes are designed to teach hiking skills needed, as well as to build camaraderie among the group, and are often as much fun as the actual traverse itself. The training hikes will all be in the Whites and those who are working on their NH 4000 footer list will be able to check off as many as 15-18 peaks by the time this experience is over. While all the crowds flock to the NH48, we will take a nice early summer hike off the beaten path up and over South and North Baldface Mountains. Although still in the White Mountain National Forest, the Baldfaces are located right on the Maine/NH line near Gorham and feature a good deal of above treeline hiking despite their lower elevation. This hike provides views of the surrounding mountains and a view across southeast Maine all the way to the ocean on clear days. We may also stop along the way at Emerald Pool, a local favorite swimming hole that has a special deep green color and is quite pretty. NOTE: This hike is not for the inexperienced hiker because it contains some large areas of sloped ledges that may be intimidating to the novice hiker. This is a nice moderate hike for those that want to hike during the day and celebrate the Fourth of July in the evening. The hike continues after the falls, gaining elevation, to the top of the Frankenstein Cliffs offering good views South. We then descend to the parking lot below where we started. This is a good beginner hike or good hike for families with children over six. The Bonds Loop includes the peaks of Mount Zealand, West Bond, Mount Bond and Bondcliff. We approach from the Zealand Valley, climb up and pass Zeacliff, with good views down the Zealand Valley along the way. Once gaining the ridge, we hike around the summit of Mount Guyot to Mount Bond and then to Bondcliff. We return and go over to West Bond before lopping back and returning to the Zealand parking area. These mountains are the jewel of the Pemigewasett Wilderness and the views from the exposed summits are spectacular. Because they are not easy to reach, they are often less crowded than some more accessible mountains despite being some of the nicest views of the Pemigewasset Valley. This is a very long hike. At 21.2 miles, hikers should be in top physical condition and while it is not a technically difficult hike, because of the distance, it should be considered one of the most strenuous single day hikes in the Whites. We start promptly at 7:30 from the Zealand parking lot and hikers should plan on a full day. Charlie put together training hikes that were very well-planned. They were as strenuous as I hoped, wanted and needed without being too much. Personally, for me, the harder the hike the more rewarding I find it; hiking truly is a “hurt so good” challenge for me! I love every second of it! As I reflect on this accomplishment, I found myself questioning whether there is another challenge that would surpass conquering 22 miles of mountain climbing with no hiking experience whatsoever. Well, I have yet to answer that question, which leaves me to believe that nothing else will ever come close. Charlie Stewart’s wealth and depth of knowledge as a guide/instructor certainly created that sense of easiness. We do this hike at the peak of Folliage season to capture all the beauty of the season as the trees erupt in riotous color. This hike is a foliage hike and we will take our time walking beside the east branch of the Pemigewasset River and then up into the meandering brooks of the valley floor. We will make camp at the campsite with hardened tent sites, and spend the night there exploring the myriad of waterfalls, pools and eddies. The Franconia Ridge is one of the most popular hiking areas in the Whites, but few do the entire ridge, and even fewer do it in a single day. Once past Lafayette, we descend to the north end of Franconia Notch tired but smiling. Because of the length of this hike, and because there are no water stops along the way and hikers must carry a full day's supply with them, this is a strenuous hike and is suited only for the most fit of hikers. This trail goes beside Gibbs Brook for part of the way, where we will look down on the frozen cataracts and falls. It then crosses an area that often fills with deep swales (which are always fun) and then turns the corner to the short finish that leads to the summit of Pierce. From the top of Pierce, if the weather is clear, we can look north and see the entire Presidential range up to Washington. It’s a great view and a nice reward after a beautiful but steady hike. This is a great winter hike for those just cutting their teeth on the winter hiking experience and while we have marked it as moderate, that is only because of the winter conditions and not because of the incline or difficulty of the hike itself. Our trail will take us on an old logging railroad bed beside the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River. When we reach the intersection with Lincoln Brook, we will take off our skis and hike the short 1/4 mi. distance to the falls itself which should be very pretty in all its frozen glory. After enjoying the scenery, we will put our cross country skis back on and return the three miles to the parking area. This trip is designed for those who are new to backcountry skiing, want to get out and experience the woods in the winter on skis, and do it safely and with a coach/instructor. What better place to ask the guy you like to marry you than from a spectacular lookout on the edge of Franconia Notch. This is a good hike with good views and offers us a nice break at the top where we can jump into the ski lodge with all the skiers and boast of climbing what they ascended by ski lift. Here, the water sluices over slabs of rock and has carved potholes, slides and pools where people of all ages take turns plunging into the cool pools and eddies. On warm still days, people are not the only ones laying on the warm rock, butterflies sometimes collect in the hundreds to drink by the still clear water and lick up the minerals washed down from the mountains. This is a great hike for families with children or anyone just getting started with hiking. We will hike out to the Falls where folks can lunch and play in the water, then hike back a few hours later once everyone is refreshed. For those interested, along the way, Charlie will talk about the history of the White Mountains and how the forest was almost completely cut down for logging. This was instrumental to the Weeks Act which paved the way for the development of the National Forest program. At the height of blueberry season, we will climb up the Blueberry Ledge trail to the top of Mount Whiteface. This mountain is in the Sandwich Range and the views are to the south over the lakes region. Despite this being one of NH's 48 4000 footers, this is a nice moderate hike and could be good for families with older kids or teens. The single-day Pemigewasset Loop is one of the longest hikes in the White Mountains and one of the toughest. Book time for completing this hike is over 20 hours, climbing over 9000 feet during the day and submitting 8-4,000 footers along the way. The hike is made up a collection of trails that circle the wilderness and is usually hiked over a period of two or three days, but we will do this as a single day hike. Hikers will need to complete a number of training hikes with the group and will have to be in top condition for this grueling test of endurance. The trail at times is steep, loose, rocky or all of the above, but that said, the hike will offer some of the best views of beautiful Pemi Wilderness that one could hope to find.
